Photo of the Day

I love getting picture texts from family members that bring back horrible flashes of my childhood: RJ Turnbull, Friday, April 6, 9:09 AM EST: “Does this bring back scary memories to anyone or is it just me?”

We may be adults. Some of us may be married and on our way to having children of our own. But the dark shadow of an enraged Denny Carroll still hangs over us. Everyone knows you don’t eat Coach Carroll’s Cheez-its. Especially during camp week.

You know who you are.

Call Me, Maybe?

Ok. So last week, Justin Bieber threw down this video for his pal Carly Rae Jepsen, and, yeah, I took it as a challenge (and basically as a way to sing and dance around my apartment with a purpose). I called everyone I knew to get this thing going. Some of them might not be speaking to me anymore. But there were the brave few who knew that this World Premiere First Ever NoMad Blog Music Video Production was going to be epic. And they were right. The conversation went something like this:

Me: I want to make this video so I need you to record yourself lip syncing to this song and then send it to me.
Loved One: Done.

Happy 60th Birthday, Jeanie Carroll!!

Jeanette Susan Turnbull was born to Raymond and Jeannette Turnbull on February 10, 1952. From day one, she’s sported a female afro.

When she was just a junior in high school, the principal told her mother, “the good news is, Jeanette is a born leader. The bad news is, she’s leading everyone in the wrong direction.” She was subsequently expelled from school for setting the bathroom on fire with an errant cigarette butt.

When she was 17, she told her dad she was going to small concert in upstate New York. At a place named Woodstock. We all know how that weekend turned out.

Brett and the Victor Cruz Salsa

Thank God Victor Cruz was one of the Giants’ players that scored last night, because if Brett didn’t get a little salsa in, no one was going home happy. The scene went a little like this:

Brett: Kelly, this dance is so easy. There’s not even steps, you just do something like this.
Me: Well, it’s actually a salsa, so there are steps, buddy. I don’t know what you’re doing but I like it.
Trevor: The steps are on the back of his shirt.

Bow. Applause.

Deportation: It Can Happen to You

Or anyone, really.

So I’m a little behind on my news because I moved and I have no internet in my new apartment (Time Warner comes on Tuesday and then I’m going to be killing life people) and work has been crazy and well, that’s it really. But I was recently reading this story about a teenage American girl who was erroneously deported to Mexico in May 2011 and was just let back into the States in January. This may sound extraordinary to some of you – implausible, you may say – but I am here to tell you that the line between unassuming American citizen and being arrested as an illegal alien is very thin. I should know.

Like any plucky and enthusiastic teenager, I made my parents take me to the DMV the day I turned 16 so I could get my learner’s permit. What a day! After years of driving my parents around town illegally I was finally going to have a piece of paper to hand over to the police when they pulled me over. I could not have been more excited.

Brett Turnbull’s Bucket List

This past weekend I had the pleasure of babysitting my godson and cousin, Brett Turnbull. He’s nine and he’s awesome. If you’ve never read the story of this year’s best school photo, I’ve placed it here for you, and I suggest you do it now. It’s ok. We’ll wait. Let us know when you’re finished.

Ok, you’re back. So Brett and I had a lot of car time together this weekend because we’re both very popular and very busy. On one of our treks together, Brett sat quietly in deep thought for a good 10 minutes before turning to me and saying: “I’m really glad I’m not afraid of airplanes anymore.”

A Picture’s Worth 1,000 Words

I snagged this picture off the website for the photographer at my cousin Fallon’s wedding. Do not tell. And in exchange for your silence, I’ll let you help me decide which direction I should take the tele/screenplay that I’m developing based on said photo. Your choices are below. Choose wisely. The future of American culture is in your hands.

Thank You for 2011!

2011 was a group effort. It was a tough year, and it was a long year, but it was also a year of a lot of new beginnings. It took a village to make 2011 happen.

From March Madness to March sadness to the weddings of my cousins RJ and Fallon, and one of my best friends, Katie. We saw the births of two new Turnbulls and learned of two more on the way. I said my latest goodbye to the great town of Boston, and finally, finally made New York City my home. Who knew 2011 would be such a roller coaster?

So This is Christmas…

If anything, Christmas is all about love, family and a family’s love of beating each other into the ground in games of friendly competition. So when someone gets a Wii for Christmas, and that Wii package includes Just Dance 3, it’s only a matter of time until all hell breaks loose. I ate a lot yesterday, but it didn’t matter because I sweated most of it off through my Ugly Sweater/Turtleneck set. It wasn’t a cute look.

Also not a cute look? Get a load of the video above. We’re white Irishmen. This is how we dance.

Ancestry.com Hands Me My First Christmas Present

I’m a journalist by nature, so sometimes during the work day I have to take the time researching the internet for things that I’m curious about. This could be anything from the dynamics of the military demarcation zone between North and South Korea to divorce proceedings between Kelsey and Camille Grammer. My mind is never at rest and my curiosity knows no bounds.

So a few weeks ago I got to thinking about family trees. There was a good point in time where I was an Ancestry.com fanatic, because I go through stages and most of them are weird. Have you ever been on Ancestry.com? There’s so much information! And all you have to do is put in people’s names! Ok, settle down. I’m getting ahead of myself.
