I Heart First Birthdays

I’ve finally come off of the sugar-high that was Chayce Turnbull’s first birthday. Root beer floats, cake, ice cream, not to mention chicken fingers and mac and cheese. Oh to be young again…wait, I ate that for dinner a week ago, by myself.

Anyway, thank you to Julie and Tim for such a great day, and for giving us the newest member of our family. And a big thank you to my dad, for not dressing up like “Junk-it the Clown” as he is prone to do for first birthdays. Seriously, there’s nothing scarier.

Also, I would just like it noted that my family basically runs away every time I come around with the camera. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

It’s O-fficial: We’ll be Dropping July 17

Those being dropped: Ray Turnbull, Samantha Dommermuth, Kelly Carroll, Ray Dommermuth, R.J. Turnbull, Nicole Schulz and Denis Carroll.

As many of you have noticed, I’ve been running a countdown on the right side of this blog, noting the time when me, three of my cousins, one cousin-to-be, my uncle and my dad will be jumping out of “a perfectly good airplane.” Well it never felt so real until today, when I finally made the reservations. Mark your calendars kids, because on Saturday, July 17 at 9 a.m., I will be strapped to a (hopefully hot) tandem skydiver, basically saying, “it’s alright if I die today.”

I’ve never been so scared in my whole frickin’ life. Guys, I’m sorry. But it’s nice to know my family will humor me through mild-to-severe emotional breakdowns.

They Just Don’t Make Marriages Like They Used To

Happy Anniversary to Nana and Pop!

My grandparents met when they were teenagers. Young teenagers, in fact, as my Nana was only 13. They were married before either one was 20 – on May 11, 1946 – and moved to California because Pop was in the navy. After his tour of duty, they moved back to New York, Nana in her 1940s pencil skirts and Pop in his navy uniform.

They had six kids and 15 crazy grandchildren. The family lived in a two bedroom apartment in the Bronx projects until my mom, the third oldest, was 11. They then moved upstate to Westchester County, in a home almost big enough for all of them, and eventually, all of us. Thirty years ago, they bought a bungalow on Long Island, right on the Moriches Bay, and eventually expanded it for their growing family. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.
