Clips with Coach: THE CHOPPING BLOCK

Editor’s Note: This week’s Clips with Coach should be taken with serious authority, as it’s written by a man with vast experience on the topic. Just kidding, Dad. No, but seriously.

March is fast approaching, and as the Top 4 teams all went down last week, some coaches are playing for their jobs.

While the powerhouses – Texas, Kansas, Ohio State, Pitt and Duke – are worrying about being #1 seeds come Tournament time, some coaches are simply worrying about being employed. The Wyoming and Stetson jobs are already open, while there are a handful of others on the “Coaching Bubble.”

The most obvious “Man Out” would seem to be Pat Kennedy at Towson. Winless in the CAA so far this year, he has done nothing in his time at the school. With a new AD in place for the Tigers, his first big hire has got to be someone who will dig in and work hard to make them competitive in a very tough conference.

Clips with Coach: “DON’T TELL ME I CAN’T, BECAUSE I WILL”

Great weekend for ESPN, and not because they broadcast the Wisconsin win over Ohio State, bringing down the last undefeated team in college basketball. Rather, it was their tributes to two super Division I basketball players – Manhattan’s Kevin Laue and Michael Lizarraga from Cal State – Northridge.

Laue, a 6-foot-10 post player for the Jaspers is missing his left hand. At birth, the circulation in his left arm was cut off by the umbilical cord, and he has spent his whole life with a left arm that ends just past the elbow. He uses his upper arm to catch the ball and he can easily palm the ball with his right hand. He did a PG season at Fork Union with Coach Fletcher Arritt – one of the best people in the world. It was there – averaging about 10 points and 5 rebounds a game – that he drew some attention from DI coaches, but it was Manhattan College’s Barry Rohrssen who was the one to make Kevin’s dream come true.

Clips with Coach: WHO IS THE FIFTH?

Although there is plenty of regular season basketball left to be played (not to mention the NCAA Tournament), the race for Player of the Year honors now seems to be between Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger and BYU’s Jimmer Fredette. Their performances have been outstanding and they have not only carried their teams, they have distanced themselves from the rest of the pack.

But, leading the “rest of the pack” has got to be Duke’s Nolan Smith, who has a legitimate shot at being the first player to ever lead the ACC in scoring and assists (21- and 6-per-game right now). Those three are a lock for All-American. The fourth member of my All-American Team is Kyle Singler. Why, you ask – because, it is “my” All-American Team and I say he deserves it…and he came back for his senior year…and he rebounds and plays D…and he makes big shots…and he gets double-teamed and opens things up for Smith and his teammates…and he had a black eye for all last year. Editor’s Note: But tell us how you really feel about him.
