Intensity. It's March.
Was it regular season MAAC champion Fairfield falling behind 40-15 at the half and eventually losing to fourth-seeded St. Peter’s? Was it Ohio State shooting a crazy 14-15 from three-point range and crushing Wisconsin, 93-65 (before the game, Buckeye players said they wanted to beat them by 50 to avenge their earlier loss)? Was it Jim Mower’s three-point basket with 0.5 seconds remaining in double-overtime to lift fifth-seeded Lafayette over second-seeded American, sending the Leopards into the Patriot League final against Bucknell? Was it fifth-seeded Stony Brook beating league champ Vermont by 22 in the American East? Was it West Virginia scoring 5 points in 9 seconds to beat Louisville? Was it lowly Iowa knocking off Purdue? Or, was it just how easy North Carolina took apart Duke?
Whatever your choice, this past weekend in College Hoops certainly stirred up some excitement for March Madness. Did it prove anything? Yes.
It proved that Ohio State is the #1 seed and the favorite to cut down the nets come April. And, yes – it proved everyone else is vulnerable and anything can happen. Yes! Anything – Harvard has a shot at going to the Tournament (maybe that is why they just reinstated ROTC). Editor’s Note: that definitely had something to do with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” but I like that in your head gay/lesbian rights and Ivy League basketball are the same thing. You should be studied. Over in the Big East, nationally-ranked UConn will be playing on the first day – could we have an upset of the bye teams? Editor’s Note: Or maybe just a re-do of that classic six-overtime UConn-Syracuse match-up. And, always a showstopper, the ACC Tournament championship is up for grabs, starting Thursday. CBS spent millions on ads to tell us about their new coverage, but the best hype was provided by the wonderful players who outdid themselves this weekend. It’s gonna be fun to watch.
