Dancing with the Stars is BACK! Cha-cha-cha!

There are three television shows I can’t live without: The Office, Lost and Dancing with the Stars. Most of the time, my opinion never matches the judges, but over the years I’ve definitely learned the difference between the cha-cha-cha and the samba, and what dances you do with a heel lead and which without.

While last season was a little blah, I think ABC is setting expectations low with only 11 contestants. I think this season is really going to be filled with a lot of surprises.

Since Tom Bergeron got right into it, so am I. Here are the recaps!

Chad Ochocinco, Cha-Cha-Cha: With a partner like Cheryl Burke, you’re always going to succeed. ABC did it right by starting with Chad, and even Len liked it. He definitely has natural rhythm, and my prediction is that he’s going to go far. But then again, I thought my bracket picks were good too.
Score: 6-6-6 (that should tell you something – yikes!)

Shannen Doherty, Viennese Waltz: I LOVE Mark Ballas. He is my dream DWTS partner. So I am slightly jealous of Shannen. She’s a little spooky, and makes me a bit nervous because of her fear of live performance. But we need to remember, this lady was in the classic 80’s flick Girls Just Wanna Have Fun with SJP. Shannen did fantastic! Should get high marks! And her dad in the stands! She’s my favorite so far!
Score: 6-6-6 (what are the judges talking about??)

Erin Andrews, Cha-Cha-Cha: First thoughts? Super awkward. Wasn’t she a cheerleader? Did I hear that wrong? Also, she’s freakin’ tall. Len and Bruno always love the leggy blondes. Maybe I never agree with them out of pure jealousy. But I really didn’t think this was very good, and it seems like the judges REALLY liked it.
Score: 7-7-7 (highest of the night so far)

Jake Pavelka, Viennese Waltz: From his intro video, this could be a mess. Definitely not better than the three before him, but Chelsie is such a good partner, she was able to make up for the mistakes. Len is being super nice tonight. It’s scaring me.
Score: 7-6-7 (the judges are on crack)

Niecy Nash, Cha-Cha-Cha I have know idea if she’s even talented yet, but she’s f-ing hilarious. Alright, she’s got a little rhythm. Not great, but fun to watch! It seems like she and Louis really get along, and I really like them together. Standing ovation! Definitely the fan favorite. Good job girl! “Way to work those jiggly parts.” -Tom
Score: 7-5-6 (Carrie Ann loves the sass!)

Evan Lysacek, Viennese Waltz: Damn you Evan! You tried to trick us with your intro video. Much better than I expected. Still a few kinks, but he’s got that skater’s ability. Carrie Ann just did her first WOO-HOO of the season. I think this score is going to be high. Bruno: “You’re moving with the grace of a swan.”
Score: 8-7-8 (FINALLY, I called it!)

Buzz Aldrin's cha-cha-cha did not impress. Photo courtesy of MTV

Buzz Aldrin, Cha-Cha-Cha: I’ve said it already, but I’ll say it again, I wish Frank Borman was doing the show. Buzz gives a shout out to West Point (“we had dances at West Point, they were called hops.”)! Ok, he’s adorable. He’s won me over. But the dancing wasn’t good. With that said, if I’m still dancing at 80-years old, give me a medal. (And I’ve been to those West Point “hops,” none of those cadets can dance.)
Score: 5-4-5

Nicole Scherzinger, Viennese Waltz: First of all, I love that Derek Hough always has to be paired with gorgeous women. And we’ll always vote for them because we love seeing him flirt. But Nicole is really good. Definitely stepping away from the Pussycat Dolls. Bruno is “astounded,” and Carrie Ann said “the bar has been set for Season 10.” Of course, Len hated it.
Score: 9-7-9 (Len is so weird sometimes)

Aiden Turner, Cha-Cha-Cha: First impression, he seems a little full of himself. He better back up that talk with some dancing! Hmm, I don’t know what to say. That wasn’t very good..it wasn’t really much of anything. If I were Edyta, I would only wear my dancing costumes, everywhere I went. Bruno bringing up Kenny Mayne. Aiden, that’s not good.
Score: 5-5-5

Kate Gosselin, Viennese Waltz: She looks so different! I want to see the kids! Tony seems like the nicest guy and they always (aside from Melissa) give him the most difficult partners. Super slow dance, but I’m glad Kate got over her “insecurities.” I’m scared – Kate may kill Bruno. I think Bruno may be unleashing a lot of “mommy” issues.
Score: 6-5-5

Pamela Anderson, Cha-Cha-Cha: There’s a good chance that Pamela Anderson is drunk. Hey, its a long show. But, there’s something endearing about her. I also want to run a comb through her hair. Carrie Ann and Bruno seem to like it. Len said it was a “mess.” I’m with Len.
Score: 7-6-8

I think this was a GREAT start, and I’m excited for the next set of dances! Brooke Burke is a nice addition – she did a great job. I called it at the beginning, low expectations make for a surprise night of dancing! Throwing a bit of a curve ball, the next episode isn’t until next Monday, March 29. So get to those phones and vote!

Prediction: Aiden Turner is ousted first.

Til next week!

Quote of the Day

I know I leave those song lyric/movie quote/Office quotes-of-the-day on the sidebar for your viewing enjoyment, but since it’s been an “iffy” day to say the least, I’d like to share this more general quote with you all, in honor of Florence “Aunt Flo” Johnston, one of the toughest ladies I’ve ever met, even to the end.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

NCAA Basketball Weekend Recap

WHAT a weekend it was! While I was in Providence, Northern Iowa was putting the hurt on Kansas. After that game, the two people in the entire world who may have still had perfect brackets were dunzo. I don’t think anyone really made it out of the first weekend alive, and my new Final Four prediction is Cornell, St. Mary’s, Northern Iowa and Syracuse (we’ll leave a number one seed in there just to keep it interesting).

NCAA Basketball Second Round - Providence, RI Photo by Allie Lastowski

I had a great time with my friends Allie and Nick at the Providence games, and while the Ohio-Tennessee match-up left a lot to be desired (and Bruce Pearl didn’t wear his orange blazer), I’m so glad I got the opportunity to go. I know no other person in the world other than myself that would rather spend a 75 degree, sunny day inside a dark and cold gym (besides my dad, who taught me everything I know).

Yay for college basketball! Just watch the video, you’ll see how much fun we had (its grainy and there’s a weird watermark because I had to convert files, but I promise, the videos will get better as I work my way to becoming the greatest blogger ever, and total world domination):

UPDATE: This video should be better:
