Clips with Coach: THE NUMBER IS STILL TWO!

Will Farrell, is that you?

Two. That is the number of NFL teams left. We do pay attention to other sports (I was the star of College Gameday at West Point this fall, in case you didn’t remember), and the Superbowl is always a great party! Does anyone else think Ben Roethlisberger looks like Will Farrell? Editor’s Note: No.

It is also the number of children Julie and Tim Turnbull now have (I would include their names but they are too hard to spell). It is the number of putts “Johnny Vegas” had on 18 to win the Bob Hope Classic Sunday (he three putted – but beat former college basketball player Gary Woodland on the second playoff hole). It is the number of games Syracuse lost this week (not enough), and it is still the number of unbeatens in Division I college basketball (ha, and you thought we were going to talk about other sports).

Clips with Coach: AND NOW THERE ARE TWO

Pitt took care of Syracuse Monday night in one of the wildest starts to a college basketball game ever. The Panthers scored the first 19, then the Orangemen the next 17 – unbelievable! Ohio State and Kansas, now the nation’s last two unbeatens, are the ones that jumped off into the week with big bullseye-targets on their backs. Kansas managed a 20-point take down of Baylor on Monday, and Ohio State will face off against Iowa tonight.

But the real winner this week is CBS, as they have been able to program the best Saturday doubleheader of the young 21st century. Ohio State vs. Illinois and Kansas vs. Texas pit four teams that will not only make the NCAA Tournament, but should each make a run to go deep in the tourney. Ohio State may have the easier path over the weekend, as they are home, freshman phenom Jared Sullinger is a beast in the paint, and Illinois did not look good in a recent loss to Wisconsin. As for Kansas/Texas, the Jayhawks are home and lead the country in field goal percentage.

Clips with Coach: AND THEN THERE WERE FIVE

Unbeaten. But for how long?

Editor’s Note: We’re a week late on Clips with Coach because Denny’s last “clip” was simply too inappropriate. And he knows it. So if you hear around town that he’s been “censored,” tell him he needs to stop or I’m going to book him under the Alien and Sedition Act and not read him his Miranda rights.

Five. That’s the number of unbeaten teams in college basketball after the first full week of conference play. Villanova was no surprise over Cincinnati; the Bearcats are just not that good. Same can be said for Central Florida, who lost to an 8-6 Houston squad. Kansas needed overtime to beat a mediocre Michigan team, Ohio State survived a scare against Minnesota (as the Gophers missed a game-tying shot at the buzzer), Syracuse only beat Seton Hall by 5, and San Diego State beat a below-.500 Utah team. The 5th unbeaten??? Yes. Duke. They were challenged by Maryland, the last team to beat them (let me see, that was…10 months and 25 games ago).
