Little League World Series Championship: Hawaii vs. Japan

I’ve loved the LLWS since I was a little kid. I’ve been twice, and I just think it’s the coolest thing for young-in’s to get to play on such an international stage.

Coverage begins on ABC today at 3 p.m. as Hawaii takes on Japan in an epic battle not seen since Pearl Harbor. Ok, Pearl Harbor was probably worse; these are 11-year-old boys we’re talking about.

If you’ve never seen the LLWS before, and have a free afternoon, I highly recommend you watch. It’s great baseball, and for a few hours you might just feel like a little kid again. Batter up!

Catch a Falling Star and Put it in Your Pocket

The last time I watched a meteor shower, I was wrapped in a blanket on Roe Park field in Highland Falls in the middle of October. It was freezing, but it was pretty awesome. So, if you have something you’be been meaning to wish upon a star about, tonight would be the night.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, the Perseid meteor shower has been raining down for the past two nights, and is set for an American performance early Friday morning. This shower is created from the debris of the Perseid comet, which flies around the sun once every 135 years, last passing in 1992, according to the CSM.

The debris “is a very old stream that has been building for a long time and is a very dense concentration of dust,” meteor researcher Peter Jenniskens told CSM. “If you look back at records from the Middle Ages, you can see that people in the Middle Ages were seeing the Perseid meteor shower.”

So grab some wine and a blanket and venture out around midnight tonight. For more details, vist the American Meteor Society .

The Big Drop: An Instant Turnbull Classic

It’s only been a week since The Big Drop, but it feels like a thousand, million years ago. All the planning, all the scary, panic-ridden anticipation, made for an awesome day, and an instant family memory that I will never, ever forget.

We woke up early last Saturday, handed out some awesome “Big Drop” T-shirts, and headed to the Long Island Skydiving Center in East Moriches, about five minutes from Nana’s, a straight shot on Montauk Highway. When we got there, my mom took one look at the open field and tiny planes and spilled her entire cup of coffee all over my car. This brought back severe anxiety memories of being late for school, mom rushing and coffee flying everywhere. Great way to start off my skydiving adventure, with sheer panic.
