I don’t know about you guys, but if Colleen Sullivan tells me something is cool, it usually is. So when she invited me to the House of Blues last Thursday to see Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, I was on board right away, even though I’m lame and had never heard of them before. (“They’re the band on Amy Winehouse’s ‘Rehab,'” Colleen told me. Say no more.)
A quick iTunes check told me that the Dap Kings also play on Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” and that Jones’ songs have been covered by the likes of Michael Buble. It also proved to me that they’re pretty freakin’ awesome.
It’s hard to beat Jones’ soulful, powerful voice, and obviously her shiny outfits. My favorite songs of the night were “Better Things,” and “I Learned the Hard Way.” Plus, the House of Blues may be one of the best concert venues in Boston, with it’s intimate atmosphere (I saw George Clinton and the Funkadelics there in February, and I’ve never been so close to a man in a diaper).
So if you’re looking for a great concert, search no further than Sharon Jones. And if you’re into music and want to see it in a cool place, the Boston House of Blues is your joint.
Right on.
So jealous. I love the Dap Kings. FYI, I saw Grace Potter and the Nocturnals in Portland last week – they rocked. And they said they were going the following night to the Boston House of Blues; I totally should have given you a head’s up. Apologies.
