Pumpkins, Wine and Mums: It’s the Fall Experience!

So every year I make the trek out to the North Fork of Long Island on Columbus Day Weekend with every sincerest intention to casually pick pumpkins, buy mums and drink some wine. This is what my mom refers to as the “Fall Experience.” However, the real version of the Fall Experience involves my mom kidnapping whatever friends I’ve invited to join us, driving them to hell and back (which is actually Jamesport to Greenport to Jamesport) in bumper-to-bumper traffic and force-feeding them corn and apple cider. She’s lucky we always seem to have beautiful weather.

This year was no different as we visited Harbes Farms, Raphael Vineyard and the Gabrielsen Greenhouse. Pumpkin count: 47 (of various shapes and sizes). Mum count: oh about 1,000, some of which are still in my car. Wine count: a delicate mixture of whites and reds.

Scenes from the Green Line

So, this may be the coolest backyard ever. And I may or may not get sued for some kind of privacy infringement. But I say, if you’re going to set up three basketball hoops and a pop-a-shot in your backyard which immediately faces the T, someone’s bound to take a picture and post in on their blog. It’s just common logic.

Clearly, this is at the Beaconsfield stop on the MBTA D Line, and the backyard lies on the inbound side. You can’t see the pop-a-shot, but it’s hooked up to the middle basket, which has it’s back to the T. When I was passing one day this spring, I saw a kid out there shooting, and he’s not bad, but he needs to grow a little. Unless he’s actually 7. In that case, some big time D-I coach needs to get to his house immediately. Of course, this is just my non-professional recruiting assessment.

Invite me over Beaconsfield backyard people! I’m lots of fun and I want to use your pop-a-shot before it gets too cold! And after that, we can take a trip to Highland Falls and play on the black top court in my backyard. Under the lights. Things get serious in the HF.

Dad’s Second Annual 60th Birthday Extravaganza: A Camera Phone Diary

A lot went on at Denny Carroll’s Second Annual 60th Birthday Party last week in North Carolina, and a lot of it I can’t discuss. I’d say “what happens in North Carolina stays in North Carolina,” but it’s more like “I can’t remember what happened in North Carolina.” So I guess I have to let the pictures speak for themselves.

P.S. – The one thing I do remember is my kick-ass birdie putt on the 18th hole of the Denny Carroll Second Annual 60th Birthday Golf Outing. Apparently I won a trip to the Bahamas. Second place was a sleeve of used golf balls, so I’m not planning my trip just yet.
