Clips with Coach: CAN/WILL DUKE RUN THE TABLE?

Irving at Oregon (AP/Troy Wayrynen)

Editor’s Note: Apparently I have great influence, because my dad, former college basketball coach Denny Carroll, has decided he needs to be a blogger. So I’m going to help him get some practice (we’re talking about practice).

Feedback is welcome, but only if it’s nice.

Prior to Duke freshman phenom Kyrie Irving going down with a toe injury, there were some rumblings among college basketball writers about the possibility of Duke accomplishing the same memorable feat Coach K’s mentor (General Robert Montgomery Knight) did with the Indiana Hoosiers in ’76, i.e. “Run the Table” (undefeated NCAA Champs!).

The Road to the Final Four Begins Today

Can you hear it now: do-do-do-do-do-do-do-do….sorry, that’s the best way I know how to write out the CBS Final Four instrumental theme song. I’m a blogger not a musician. Anyway, can you believe it? College basketball practice starts today, and it seems like only yesterday I was recapping this, and this and this.

Last year at this time I was in West Virginia, celebrating the Mountaineers’ Midnight Madness. And they made it to the Final Four. So I’m pretty much magic. This year I’ll be at my cousin’s rehearsal dinner (I know, my priorities are very messed up right now). So I guess this means the season is anyone’s for the taking.

Scenes from the Green Line

So, this may be the coolest backyard ever. And I may or may not get sued for some kind of privacy infringement. But I say, if you’re going to set up three basketball hoops and a pop-a-shot in your backyard which immediately faces the T, someone’s bound to take a picture and post in on their blog. It’s just common logic.

Clearly, this is at the Beaconsfield stop on the MBTA D Line, and the backyard lies on the inbound side. You can’t see the pop-a-shot, but it’s hooked up to the middle basket, which has it’s back to the T. When I was passing one day this spring, I saw a kid out there shooting, and he’s not bad, but he needs to grow a little. Unless he’s actually 7. In that case, some big time D-I coach needs to get to his house immediately. Of course, this is just my non-professional recruiting assessment.

Invite me over Beaconsfield backyard people! I’m lots of fun and I want to use your pop-a-shot before it gets too cold! And after that, we can take a trip to Highland Falls and play on the black top court in my backyard. Under the lights. Things get serious in the HF.
