Here’s to You, Mr. Robinson

If you’re seeing the number 42 over and over again, don’t think you’re going crazy. Today is Jackie Robinson day in Major League Baseball, and according to ESPN, “everyone in baseball – players, umpires, managers, coaches, bat boys? ball girls? – will wear the No. 42 today,” honoring the sports hero’s major league debut, 63 years ago.

All teams are set to honor Robinson, while his family will participate in a nationally-televised ceremony before the Yankees-Angels game tonight at Yankee Stadium.

“Jackie Robinson’s incredible legacy continues to impact our society today,” said Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig in an official statement released yesterday. “Baseball’s proudest moment was when Jackie took the field in 1947, so it is important to always remember him and his achievements. It is a privilege to pay tribute to the effect he had on baseball and our country by continuing to honor his Number 42.”

And while honoring Robinson today, let us not forget Moses Fleetwood Walker and William Edward White. Play ball!

Quote of the Day

It's not Penny's boat, brotha! Photo courtesy of ABC

Lost. It’s given us such good material over the years, and the last two episodes have definitely lived up to the hype of the much-talked-about last season. If you don’t watch, I’m not going to even try to explain it to you, but so far, Locke is smoke, Claire is crazy, Hurley’s in charge, Sun can’t talk, Jin is being held hostage and the whispers are dead people…I know, right?!?!

But my favorite character might have to be Desmond, not only because he’s so hot it’s stupid but mostly because he’s in love with Penny, and proving that some people are just destined to be together. And that thought makes me happy. So, this week, Fake Locke asks Desmond why he isn’t afraid, and he responds, ever so transcendentally:

“What’s the point of being afraid?”

A great Lost moment, so poignant, so true. But then Fake Lock threw Desmond down a well, so my sentimental-ism for Desmond’s mystic new state of mind, sadly, only lasted for a few seconds. Desmond gets back at him later in the episode by running a wheelchair-bound, Sideways-world Locke over with his car. It makes sense, trust me.

Scenes from next week promise super creepiness mixed with Willy Wonka music. I can’t wait!.

@LibraryCongress to Begin Archiving All Tweets

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: we need to get back to letter writing. If only for our progeny’s sake.

According to New York magazine, the Library of Congress announced today (via Twitter no less) that it will soon be in possession of every single tweet that’s ever been tweeted (publicly) since the inception of the social networking site.

From @LibraryCongress’ Twitter page:

Library to acquire ENTIRE Twitter archive — ALL public tweets, ever, since March 2006! Details to follow.

While I understand that this could be a really cool endeavor, I would hope that 100 years from now, when my grandchildren’s grandchildren are visiting the Library of Congress, they’ll have a lot more to read than Justin Bieber lyrics and status updates. However, if Twitter is in fact the tool the terrorists will use to finally take out America, as I believe it will be, it might be nice to have everything documented according to the Dewey Decimal System.
