No Mission Too Great: West Point in the Modern World

Photo taken from the Joseph Raskin Gallery of Etchings

In light of this week’s news events, I went digging into my emails looking for my grad school thesis. Having grown up outside the gates of the United States Military Academy, I chose to write about how, if at all, West Point had changed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

It has been said that the two planes that crashed into the Twin Towers had crossed paths right over West Point as they traveled down the Hudson River. The Towers collapsed a mere 50 miles from the Academy’s gates. Yet I found, some three years ago, that the Academy’s mission remained largely intact.

A few notes: 1) My writing has changed dramatically, so I apologize for the parts where it gets pretty boring. 2). Who approved this? I feel like I could have done better (said with diploma in hand). Enjoy.

Someone in My Building has a Serious Agenda

Back in April, ABC announced that it was going to cancel the long-running daytime soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live. While clearly devastating news, I haven’t been home during the day in about, oh, 22 years, so I did not feel this news pertained to me, nor did I think I’d be talking about it now, a month later. The acronyms were unintelligible to me, and I didn’t really give it much thought after that. But yesterday, coming home from what was once again an awesome Zumba class, groceries in hand and struggling to find my keys, I gave the sign a second glance. “Save Soaps AMC and OLTL!” I went back and forth about publishing this phone number, but ultimately determined this person is asking for it.

“The Highest Appreciation is Not to Utter Words, But to Live by Them”

I stopped by the 9/11 memorial in Boston’s Public Garden this morning on my way to work to pay tribute to everyone who lost their lives on that terrible day. If you’ve never been, it’s a great place to sit and reflect, should you need to.

Just thought I’d share some photos of the memorial, covered with flowers and notes from people after Sunday’s news that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, is dead.

Always remember. Never surrender.
