This Whole Big East/ACC Business Has Got Me All Upset

I'm just fed up, Jim.

Approximately 7 wonderful years ago, I was a junior at Boston College. I was working, as most of you know, as a manager for the men’s basketball team, and the school and athletic department had just recently cut a deal to move from their ingrained spot in the Big East to the every-shade-of-blue ACC.

Well, there were some people who didn’t take this news well. And by some people, I mean UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun. So while BC did their farewell tour of the Big East Conference schools in the winter of 2004-2005, Jim Calhoun continued to spew venom our way. And I’m pretty sure he vowed he would never, ever, play us again. Ever.

Well that’s going to be pretty tough when your campaign to join the ACC ends up being successful, isn’t it Jimmy?

These Sneakers Had a Lot of Sole

R.I. P.

Alright, so I’m not going to say this was my mom’s fault, but I am going to say that she’s to blame.

As we all know, Jeanie Carroll has an undeniable knack for forcing people to do things they don’t want to do, and several times in my life this something I didn’t want to do was go for a long walk while a natural disaster/storm was happening outside.

During the Blizzard of 2001, Jeanie made me, Jamie and Jack the Dog walk all the way to the Holleder Center to catch Dad’s basketball practice. Halfway there, Jack’s glom was frozen to his face, and Jamie kept screaming “I’m not in a very good place!” When Jeanie came to visit me in January 2010, she forced me to walk the 3 miles to and from Zaftigs in Coolidge Corner. My body hurt so, so much the next day, since I was bracing myself for a fall on the ice the entire time. And most recently, in North Carolina last weekend, Jeanie led a group along the “trails” of Cary, only to be caught in a torrential downpour from which my clothes have still not dried. And this, of course, resulted in the destruction of my most beloved sneakers.

Clips with Coach: NOW THAT THE MADNESS IS OVER

Yes, the Championship Game was certainly not what we had hoped for, but the 2010-11 College Basketball season was terrific! UConn’s run will have to go down as the best ever – I’m not a math guy, but I don’t believe it’s possible to win more than 11 games in a post-season. Butler getting back to the Championship Game is an accomplishment that should not go unnoticed. And 70,356 people attending the final game will be hard to match.

We also had VCU reaching the Final Four, probably replacing George Mason as the most recognizable modern Cinderella. Jimmer Fredette won the Naismith Award, and singlehandedly carried his BYU team to national prominence. So, what could we possibly do to make the GAME better? We need to clean-up the image.
